About Manchester Cathedral

Manchester's fine 15th-century church of St.Mary was raised to cathedral status in 1848. It is a magnificent example of Perpendicular Gothic church building, with a tower added in 1868.

Once spotted, the glorious building captivates you, and once inside visitors find its sheer beauty overwhelming. Its true glory lies in its woodwork - gleaming stalls with intricate canopies, fine misericords depicting foxes, a monkey with flask, and a broken pot, to name but a few. Glance upwards and you are struck by the magical grace of the roof bosses and the detail of the intricate roof carving. Other treasures include the outstanding east window below which is a magnificent alter-piece, and the Lever Tablet, this recalls the tragic story of Robert Lever's children. The wooden pulpitum is a masterpiece of medieval woodcarving with three double doors, made entirely of oak. In the nave fourteen angels adorn the wall posts, these depict a heavenly choir.

This spectacular building has treasures all to numerous to mention in one short article, it is a stirringly beautiful house of god which is a constant source of amazement, it is well worth spending time both within the splendid interior and taking a closer look at the architectural beauty of the exterior.

During the year the cathedral hosts a number of musical events, with emphasis on carol services for the month of December.

There is a Visitor's Centre with a licensed restaurant, and a superb gift shop
